What is binaural audio?
Binaural audio is two-channel sound made to be heard on headphones, with each ear getting exactly what it would hear in a real space. Done right, sounds seem to come from around you, behind you and above you, not from inside your head.
Two ways to make it
- Binaural recording: a dummy head with a microphone in each ear captures a real space exactly as a listener would hear it.
- Binaural rendering: a plugin takes an ordinary recording and adds the direction cues with an HRTF, so you can place and move it anywhere after the fact.
Binaural vs stereo
Regular stereo places sounds on a line between two speakers. Binaural uses the cues your ears rely on for direction, including timing, level and the tone of your outer ear, so it can place sounds behind and above you as well. The catch is that it needs headphones.
Binaural audio is not binaural beats
The names are close but the ideas are different. Binaural beats play a slightly different tone in each ear, and many people use them for sleep, focus or meditation. Binaural audio is about where sounds are in space. The two can meet in meditation audio, where binaural placement is used for voice, breath and ambience around the listener.
