What is HRTF?

HRTF stands for head-related transfer function. It describes how your head, your outer ears and your shoulders change a sound before it reaches your eardrums. Your brain reads those changes to tell where a sound is coming from.

The three cues your ears use

  • Timing: a sound on your left reaches your left ear a fraction of a millisecond before your right ear.
  • Level: your head blocks some of the sound, so the far ear hears it quieter, especially in the high frequencies.
  • Tone: the folds of your outer ear colour the sound differently depending on whether it comes from the front, behind, above or below. This is how you hear height, and front versus back.

Why HRTF matters on headphones

On headphones, each ear gets its own signal with none of those cues, so sound sits inside your head. An HRTF adds them back. That's why games like Valorant offer an HRTF setting: it helps you hear whether footsteps are in front of you or behind you.

Everyone's ears are a little different, so a generic HRTF won't be perfect for every listener. Front and back can occasionally swap, and that's normal. Movement helps a lot, because your brain locks onto a moving sound much more easily than a still one.

HRTF in music production

An HRTF plugin lets you place a sound anywhere around the listener, not just between left and right. Producers use it for immersive mixes, ASMR, meditation audio, podcasts and sound design, all without a surround speaker setup.

3D Panner places a source on a sphere around the listener using HRTF binaural rendering.

Try HRTF placement in your own mix

  1. Load 3D Panner on a single, clear sound: a vocal, a shaker or a synth lead.
  2. Put on headphones and move the source from front to back, then from low to high.
  3. Add slow movement with an LFO. You'll find the position much easier to hear once it moves.

QUESTIONS

Does HRTF work on speakers?

HRTF processing is designed for headphones. On speakers, the sound from each speaker reaches both ears, which blurs the cues.

What is the difference between HRTF and binaural audio?

The HRTF is the filter that describes how your ears hear direction. Binaural audio is the two-channel result you listen to on headphones, recorded with a dummy head or rendered with an HRTF.

Is an HRTF plugin the same as Dolby Atmos?

No. Dolby Atmos is a format for mixing to speakers and, on headphones, is played back binaurally. An HRTF plugin like 3D Panner renders binaurally inside your own stereo mix.
