What makes ASMR sound 3D
Your brain works out where a sound comes from using tiny differences between your two ears: which ear hears it first, which ear hears it louder, and how your head and outer ear colour the sound on the way in. Together those cues are called a head-related transfer function, or HRTF.
A binaural microphone, like a 3Dio or a dummy head, captures those cues by recording through fake ears. An HRTF plugin recreates them from an ordinary recording. Either way, the result only works on headphones, which is how nearly everyone listens to ASMR anyway.
Binaural microphone or binaural plugin?
A binaural mic bakes the position into the recording. If a tap lands in the wrong place, you record it again. Do I need a binaural microphone for 3D ASMR?

Does 3D ASMR work on speakers?
Not really. Binaural audio relies on each ear hearing its own signal, which only headphones and earbuds give you.
