3D PANNER FOR MUSIC PRODUCERS

3D audio for every track in your mix.

Stereo width and imaging plugins can only push a sound further left or right. 3D Panner places it on a sphere around the listener, in front, behind, above or below, using HRTF binaural rendering. The result plays back as 3D on any pair of headphones.

What 3D audio means for a producer

"3D audio" and "spatial audio" get used for a lot of things, from headphones to game consoles. In a mix, it means putting a sound somewhere a normal pan can't reach: behind the listener, above them, or far away.

On headphones that takes binaural rendering with an HRTF, the filter that copies how your ears hear direction. 3D Panner renders to binaural stereo, so the 3D effect lives inside an ordinary stereo file that you can release anywhere.

Beyond stereo width and stereo imaging

A stereo widener or imager changes how wide a sound feels between two speakers. That's useful, but width is still one line. 3D Panner adds height, depth and front to back, so a pad can float above the mix, a vocal double can come from behind you, and the lead stays right in front.

What you can do with it

  • Turn any song, finished or still in progress, into an immersive 3D mix by placing it on the sphere. Or work stem by stem.
  • Auto-pan in 3D with eight built-in LFOs, including random and pendulum, or draw your own path on the XY pad. Free-run them or sync them to your project tempo.
  • Split a sound into up to eight frequency bands, each with its own limiter, to control the low end, mids and highs separately.
  • Choose from up to 20 different HRTF measurements to find the one that fits the shape of your head.
  • Make 8D audio: put a whole track on the sphere and let it circle the listener.

How to make a spatial audio mix with 3D Panner

  1. Load 3D Panner on the tracks you want out of the stereo field: pads, percussion, vocal doubles, effects. Keep the kick and bass in the centre without it.
  2. Place each one on the sphere. Keep the main vocal and lead in front, and use behind and above for the parts that support them.
  3. Add movement with a tempo-synced LFO on risers, hats or atmospheres.
  4. Try a few HRTF measurements and keep the one that sounds most natural to you.
  5. Check the mix on headphones, then bounce a normal stereo file.

QUESTIONS

Is 3D Panner a VST plugin?

Yes. It comes as VST3, AU and AAX plugins plus a standalone app, on macOS and Windows. It works in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Reaper, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig and more.

Will my 3D mix work on Spotify and YouTube?

Yes. You bounce a regular stereo file, so it plays anywhere. Listeners hear the 3D effect on headphones.

What's the difference between spatial audio and a stereo widener?

A widener stretches a sound between left and right. Spatial audio places it all around the listener, including behind and above.

Does it work on speakers?

The binaural 3D effect is designed for headphones, which is where it sounds its best.
