3D PANNER FOR MEDITATION & WELLNESS AUDIO
Guided meditations that surround the listener.
A guided meditation usually puts the voice, the music and the nature sounds in one flat layer. 3D Panner places each of them around the listener with HRTF binaural rendering: the voice close by, bowls to either side, rain above, a stream behind. The session starts to feel like a place the listener is sitting in.
Why 3D works for meditation and sleep audio
Meditation, sleep and relaxation audio is often heard on headphones or earbuds, often lying down with eyes closed. With nothing to look at, sound carries the whole experience, and sounds placed around the listener give them something to rest their attention on.
Binaural audio and binaural beats
The two get mixed up, but they are different things. Binaural beats play a slightly different tone in each ear. Binaural audio places sounds in space around the listener. 3D Panner does the second, not the first.
They work well together. If you use binaural beats, keep those tones on their own track without 3D Panner, so each ear still gets its own tone. Then use 3D Panner on the voice, the music and the ambience around them.
Sound bath, sound healing and breathwork
Singing bowls, gongs and chimes can be placed in a circle around the listener, much like lying in the middle of a live sound bath. For breathwork sessions, keep the guide's voice close and let the music rise and move around the listener as the session builds.
What you can do with it
- Place the guide's voice close to the listener, as if they were sitting right beside them.
- Put singing bowls, chimes and gongs in a circle around the listener.
- Surround the session with nature sounds: rain above, a stream behind, birds far away.
- Add slow movement with the pendulum LFO or a path you draw on the XY pad, paced like a breath.
- Choose from up to 20 different HRTF measurements to find the one that sounds most natural to you.
How to make a 3D guided meditation with 3D Panner
- Record your meditation script close to the mic and as dry as you can.
- Put the voice, music, bowls and nature sounds on separate tracks in your DAW, and load 3D Panner on each one.
- Place the voice in front and close. Spread the bowls and nature sounds around and above the listener.
- Add very slow movement to one or two elements. Keep the voice still.
- If you use binaural beats, leave those tones on their own track without 3D Panner.
- Export as usual, and tell listeners to use headphones.
QUESTIONS
Does 3D Panner make binaural beats?
No. It places sounds around the listener. Binaural beats come from separate tone generators, and they work best on their own track, next to the 3D-placed voice and ambience.
Does it work for sleep meditation and hypnosis audio?
Yes. It works on any voice-led audio. You export a regular stereo file that plays in any meditation app, on YouTube or on a podcast platform.
Do my listeners need special headphones?
No. Any regular headphones or earbuds work.
Which software does it work in?
Any DAW that loads VST3, AU or AAX plugins, such as Logic Pro, Reaper, Ableton Live, Pro Tools and FL Studio. There is also a standalone app: play an audio file or a live mic through it and record the result to WAV.
