3D PANNER FOR POST-PRODUCTION ARTISTS

Put the viewer inside the scene.

In a stereo mix, footsteps, doors and room tone all sit on a line in front of the viewer. 3D Panner places foley, dialogue and ambience around them with HRTF binaural rendering, so a scene heard on headphones has a front, a back and a ceiling.

Where it fits in post

3D Panner renders binaural stereo, so it fits any project delivered in stereo and watched on headphones: YouTube videos, social content, short films, web series and trailers. The result is an ordinary stereo file that plays everywhere, with the 3D placement coming through on headphones.

Foley that moves with the picture

Foley is usually recorded close and in mono, then placed in the mix. With 3D Panner you can put footsteps behind a character, a door off-screen to the left, or cloth movement right at the ear for a point-of-view shot, and move each sound as the action moves.

Ambience and room tone around the viewer

Room tone and background sound effects are what make a location feel real. Instead of sitting in front of the viewer with everything else, they can wrap around them, while on-screen dialogue stays anchored in front. Off-screen dialogue can come from the side or from behind, where the character actually is.

What you can do with it

  • Place foley sound effects where the action happens, including off-screen and behind the viewer.
  • Wrap ambience, room tone and background sound effects around the viewer.
  • Move a sound with the picture using automation, an LFO or a path drawn on the XY pad.
  • Split a sound into up to eight frequency bands, each with its own limiter, to control rumble and harshness while it moves.
  • Choose from up to 20 different HRTF measurements to find the one that sounds most natural to you.
Placing a source anywhere around the listener: front, back, left, right, above and below.

How to spatialize a scene with 3D Panner

  1. Keep on-screen dialogue in front and in the centre.
  2. Load 3D Panner on your foley, sound effects and ambience tracks.
  3. Place each sound where it happens in the scene, including off-screen.
  4. Automate the position so sounds follow the movement on screen.
  5. Watch the cut on headphones, then export your stereo mix.
